Introduction of the
Coton to North America |
 |
|
In 1973, biologist Robert J. Russell, became
fascinated with a dog he met in Madagascar while completing his
doctorate. Captivated by a happy little dog owned by a Merina
businessman, Dr. Russell soon learned that the breed
was known as the Coton de Tulear. After contacting
Malagasy breeders of the Coton, Dr. Russell was able to convince
them of his sincere interest in the breed. He was able to
acquire several of the little dogs that eventually accompanied
him back to the United States. His parents soon became
fans of these dogs and
established what was known as Oakshade Kennels in 1974. For
many years, Oakshade Kennel was known as the "Sole Breeder of
the Coton de Tulear in North America". Due to the winning
personalities and attractive appearance of the Coton, they have
attracted the attention of American dog fanciers, gaining in
popularity in recent years. Several kennels have been
established in recent years by dedicated rare breed enthusiasts
devoted to preserving the uniqueness that is the Coton.
